INTERNATIONAL MOTORCYCLE TOURS

WHY TRAVEL INTERNATIONALLY WITH BRET TKACS?

You would be hard-pressed to find an adventure motorcycle instructor who has logged the kind of miles, or crossed the kind of borders, that Bret Tkacs has. Over the past three decades, he has ridden through 49 countries on journeys that most ADV riders dream about – and many who wouldn’t dare attempt. Bret’s credentials are built from two epic continental expeditions that tested everything he teaches.

The Pan-American Odyssey:
Five months on the road from Seattle, Washington to Ushuaia, Argentina – the southernmost city in the world. Bret rode the entire length of the Americas, through the rainforests of Central America, across the Andes (multiple times) and into Patagonia’s notoriously unforgivable winds. He slept in remote villages during blackouts, camped in fields, negotiated borders where the rules change by the hour, and fixed bikes with improvised tools where the nearest dealer is a thousand miles away. Worse yet, Bret made this entire journey with a girlfriend who was brand new to motorcycling, and who created many events that Bret would not have experienced otherwise, to include crossing a border at midnight during a monsoon, and turned a sudden high-speed front-tire blowout into making lifelong friends with a local mechanic and his family. Bret is truly an adventurer who learned a long time ago that the best stories come from moments when things don’t go according to plan.

The African Expedition:
Not content with conquering the Americas, Bret set his sights on an even more ambitious route: Ponferrada, Spain to South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope, riding the entire west coast of Africa from north to south. Five months of navigating Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, Mauritania’s endless desert crossings, the chaotic border bureaucracy of West Africa, and the remote wilderness of Angola and Namibia. He crossed regions where political instability made every day unpredictable, roads that were little more than sand tracks with land mines, disappearing into the Sahara, and checkpoints where negotiation skills mattered as much as riding ability. He and his travel partner dealt with corrupt officials, impassable “roads”, fuel shortages in countries with virtually no infrastructure, and the novelty of being the first American some border officials have ever met. He has experienced (unintentionally) camping in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and sleeping at an abandoned gas station in South Africa during a downpour.

These journeys aren’t just impressive statistics; they are proof of mastery. Bret didn’t just survive these routes; he thrived on them, learning from his (very experienced) travel partner to develop a deep understanding of international motorcycle travel logistics, the importance of cross-cultural communication that always ends with a smile and a handshake no matter what, emergency problem-solving, and the kind of situational awareness that only comes from months of high-stakes decision-making on remote roads.

Teaching and Leading Across Continents:
Beyond his personal expeditions, Bret has shared his expertise as an instructor and guide in some of the world’s most legendary riding destinations. He taught ADV motorcyclists in India, coached students in Colombia, and toured around New Zealand with BikeFest. As a tour leader, he’s navigated two groups through Morocco’s High Atlas passes, seven groups across Nepal’s Himalayan routes where altitude tests everyone differently, and one special group along the Tibetan Plateau where the combination of extreme elevation, unpredictable weather, and government regulations separate those who know what they’re doing from those who don’t (read the review below for more):

Bret and the team he had did a great job on this trip. What really made the difference was when everything went wrong, outside of the control of anyone on the trip. Let me explain. While we were in Tibet, an out of season monsoon hit, primarily in Nepal but it also washed away the only road that we could use to re-enter Nepal from Tibet. Bret and his team did an outstanding job keeping us up to date on the situation. Eventually the Chinese government instructed us that we had to leave but the only way to do so was to fly from Lhasa to Chengdu and then to Nepal. Bret and the team organized a bus to drive us the two days to Lhasa and prioritized those of us that needed to be back by specific dates so that we could get out of Tibet and hopefully make it back in time. I was in the first group of 7 and while it was a very difficult process, navigating the Chinese visa requirements, passport control and the bureaucracy for us to leave the country, we eventually made it back to Nepal in time so that I was able to return to the US with no issues. I’m sure Bret and those working hard behind the scenes were very stressed by all this, their professionalism and positive attitude kept all of us free from the worry of how we were going to get home. I personally want to thank Bret, Christina, Matt, Samdup and Namgyl for dealing with all these issues behind the scenes in order to get us out of Tibet and back to Nepal. As Bret says, Attitude Matters and when everything is going well, that’s easy to say but this situation shows that Bret lives by those words. In the end, we accomplished 90% of the trip as planned. That 90% was full of great riding, interesting experiences and amazing sights. So much of what I experienced was a first for me and challenged my expectations. This trip wasn’t what I expected and that’s a good thing because it expanded my world, which I guess was what I had hoped but it was unlike what I had imagined.

NEPAL

ADVENTURE TRAINING TOUR

November 2 - 14, 2026

This expedition goes into the secluded upper Mustang Region, nestled within the rain shadow of the highest mountain range in the world – the Himalaya. Only recently opened to foreigners with a Nepali guide, and protected by a restrictive access permit, this isolated region is the best-preserved remnant of Tibet.

Access to this region is not cheap, not easy and at times… not comfortable. However, the scenery at over 12000′, the undisturbed culture and the feeling of total isolation are completely worth the effort and sacrifice. Visit Lo Manthang, the forbidden city and the last piece of authentic Tibetan life.

Absolutely unforgettable trip of a lifetime! For me, it’s about 3 things: The meeting and talking with the local people to get an understanding of how others live and how we all, basically crave the same things; meeting new friends in the adventure motorcycling community; and experiencing the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and geography of a new country. This trip provided the best of all three. The Nepali people are wonderful…gentle, kind, friendly and open. I’ve never felt more safe on an international trip. The fellow riders were terrific. We came from all corners of the country, aged between 32 and 76, vocations as varied as a commercial cabinet builder, to restaurant owner, hospital executive, retired social worker just to name four. We all had the moto-affliction and had an incredible time with no shortage of conversation. And Nepal…my goodness. From the crazy traffic in Kathmandu, to the incredible peace, serenity, and sheer spirituality (with occasional craziness thrown in) of riding through the Upper Mustang region, it was an experience like no other. And throughout it all, Bret maintains control, even in the situations beyond all of our control, to provide an experience you’ll just want to repeat for as long as you’re physically able. I can’t recommend any more highly.

Riding a bike on sand in Morocco

MOROCCO

ADVENTURE TOUR

- - dates to be determined - -

This small group adventure includes one day of training in advanced riding skills, mechanics, and navigation. This tour is unlike any other – we will have anchor point stops and the points in between is decided by the group. This is not a tour that adheres to a specific time schedule or route, the dynamic nature of this tour makes it YOUR tour.

Major stops along the route will include paces like the tanneries of Fes, the blue city of Chefchaouen, and ancient Roman ruins. You will be expected to service your bike each evening, find lodging, and navigate Moroccan traffic all while carrying your gear on your motorcycle.

Take a trip back to the origins of ADV riding and travel across international borders to a place you will never forget.

This was my first adventure tour and it was beyond my expectations. Bret encourages you to slow down and enjoy the people, the food, the culture and your surroundings. You will come away with fresh appreciation of Morocco and its people. I have always felt uneasy in foreign countries. Not so on this trip. I felt completely at ease. I also made new friends on this trip. I hope to be able to ride with them again and in fact are in the planning stages now. I won’t forget this trip nor the people I shared it with. Thanks so much Bret and Christina for making this a memory of a lifetime. Looking forward to the next one.

F-Roads in Iceland with Bret Tkacs

ICELAND

ADVENTURE TOUR

- - dates to be determined - -

Anyone can ride a motorcycle through Iceland, but accessing its most jaw‑dropping landscapes requires traveling Iceland’s famed F‑roads, which are off‑limits to rental cars and motorcycles.

On this proposed tour, Bret has already secured special permission to ride these remote routes alongside Icelandic locals, unlocking secrets most visitors never see, like the geothermal pools of Landmannalaugar via F208, the dramatic Askja caldera and Viti crater lakes on F88/F910, or the breathtaking Stuðlagil basalt canyon and Laki craters only reachable by F‑road tracks. Our goal is to ride alongside locals and explore Iceland like you’ve never seen it before.

We are currently working with an operator in Iceland but have been unable to secure dates.

COLOMBIA

ADVENTURE TOUR

- - dates to be determined - -

Skip the congested Pan‑American Highway and dive into Colombia’s most captivating landscapes—from the twisting dirt tracks of Chicamocha Canyon through remote villages and the lush backroads of the Coffee Triangle. This journey is best experienced with local guides—and Bret is in the process of securing a connection.

With over 30 years of teaching motorcyclists and having already ridden the entirety of South America and Africa, Bret offers unmatched safety oversight, helping you ride with confidence on steep, narrow trail networks. More than just a tour, this journey fosters real cultural interactions—stopping for fresh fruit juice in village plazas, chatting with locals over arepas, and soaking in hot springs after dusty days.

We are in the negotiation process with a tour operator in Colombia, and I still need to scout the proposed route.
